A FINE 17TH CENTURY ENGLISH DISH-HILT RAPIER

108.25cm slender square section blade, the sides with raised medial ridge, transitioning to diamond section and with a flared mail-piercing tip, engraved LEGES ANNO 1624 and with the initials P.P. on one side and with partial inscription .....DEO GLORIA on the other, characteristic shallow dish hilt embossed and chiselled with four profile busts of a woman, probably Henrietta Maria, within laurel wreaths interspersed with panels of foliage and garlands on a stippled ground, rope twist quillons and upper guard, the D-shaped knuckle and long ovoid pommel decorated to match, copper wire bound grip with Turk's heads, complete with its original leather scabbard with brass suspension hook and iron chape. See IX-989 Royal Armouries for a not dissimilar example with plain dish but similar spiral decoration to the quillons and knuckle guard.
