A SCARCE GEORGIAN NAVAL DIRK WITH ROYAL CONNECTIONS

15.25cm flattened diamond section blade etched with scrolling foliage and swags, gilt cross form guard engraved with chevrons to the top, gilt mounted ring turned ebonised tapering wooden grip, the domed pommel encircled with a gilt coronet with foliate gilt washer to the top, contained in its copper gilt foliate engraved scabbard. See Fairbairns book of crests Plate 127, No. 3 designating coronets of this form as Younger Sons and Brothers of the Blood Royal and Sim Comfort Naval Swords & Dirks Vol II page 323 for a discussion about these small form dirks. It would seem that if the coronet was taken literally, this may have been the dirk of The Duke of Clarence.
