90.5cm fullered blade by Gill, etched with a maker's panel, stands of arms, laurel wreath, a mounted cavalryman, crowned Royal arms and scroll banner regimental title 17th Dragoons and owner's name Captain Jephson, regulation steel hilt with elongated slender langets, D-shaped knuckle guard, reeded wooden grip, in its panelled steel scabbard with leather insert. Captain William Jephson of the 17th Light Dragoons initially served with the 28th Regiment of Foot in North America Battle of White Plains and also served in the West Indies. Court-martialled for brawling in 1803, suspended and dismissed. As well as being a heavy drinker, gambler and brawler he was married three times and to more than one at a time. Sold with a quantity of research.
