AN EARLY 17TH CENTURY GERMAN PAPPENHEIMER RAPIER

90cm flattened diamond section blade, the ricasso retaining part of its original leather covering and bearing the maker's stamp for Johannes Wundes of Solingen, characteristic with faceted quillons with flared terminals, the fore guard composed of two looping bars and a circular pierced inner guard, the rear guard composed of three looping bars, D-shaped knuckle guard with two scroll supports, large spherical pommel, partial wire binding to the wooden grip. Johannes Wundes circa 1625-1650. For a fine rapier bearing a similar mark to the ricasso see Victoria and Albert Museum Accession Number M.94-1921.
