81.5cm clipped back blade by Howell, James & Co, profusely etched with scrolling foliage and a presentation panel FROM THE VICEROY, 1ST JANUARY 1877, the chiselled gilt hilt decorated with acanthus scrolls, the crossguard with centered oval enamel plaque decorated with a crowned L within a laurel wreath, chiselled ivory two-piece grips decorated with scrolling vines and retained by two foliate rivets, bullion knot, contained in its red velvet covered wooden scabbard with open work gilt mounts decorated with strapwork and acanthus, the middle mount with phot-miniature of the recipient. The crest and photograph are that of The Earl of Lytton. Robert Bulwer-Lytton was a Diplomat and between 1877-1880 he was the viceroy of India. During this period his principal objective was the quelling of Russian influence in Afghanistan which eventually saw the initiation of the Second Afghan War. Contained in its green velvet lined wooden case, lower portion replaced, the lid with applied brass Royal Arms and complete with suspension straps. Ivory declaration submission number R8QL99QA
