AN EARLY 17TH CENTURY NORTH EUROPEAN RAPIER OF PAPPENHEIMER FORM

108.5cm flattened diamond section blade incised I V MARIA MA, characteristic hilt, the shell guard with scalloped piercings, perforation to one side, the elongated quillons with swollen terminals and multiple scrolling supports, D-shaped knuckle bow, ovoid pommel, the whole engraved with scrolling foliage, wooden grip. The blade tang stamped with a crowned shield and trident maker's mark just within the shell guard.
