A 17TH CENTURY ENGLISH CIVIL WAR PERIOD MORTUARY HILTED BACKSWORD

85cm triple fullered blade with geometric piercings to the broadest fuller, characteristic hilt pierced with scrolling foliage and busts, remnants of sidebars and partial scroll supports, the spherical pommel chiselled with busts and foliage. A later attached label claims that the sword was discovered in the roof of Low Ham Manor Farm near Langport in 1994. The geographic location would suggest either the Battle of Langport on 10th July 1645 or Sedgemoor, 6th July 1685.
