AN 18TH CENTURY STEEL HILTED SMALL SWORD

81.75cm flattened diamond section blade incised in the short central fuller FORTUNA to one side and VIRTUTE on the other, characteristic hilt in the style of John Wilcox of London, the two dished looping side guards with pierced foliate decoration and geometric borders, D-shaped knuckle bow with two shallow supports, reeded and foliate decorated spherical pommel, spirally fluted wire bound grip with turk's heads. See London Silver Hilted Swords by Leslie Southwick page 275 plate 12 for a similar example in silver. Circa 1685.
