A LATE 17TH CENTURY SHOTLEY BRIDGE MATROSSES BRASS HILTED HANGER

68.5cm slightly curved fullered blade broadening towards the tip incised with the Shotley Bridge fox mark to either side, characteristic cast brass hilt decorated with scrolling foliage and dragons to either side, the pommel in the form of the head of a mythical beast, shell guard decorated with a grotesque mask, D-shaped knuckle bow. Circa 1692. See European Swords and Daggers in the Tower of London, p.28, pl.67c.
