A 16TH CENTURY OFFICER'S QUALITY ITALIAN CABASET

the single piece skull composed of alternately polished and black varnished panels, chiselled with a large heraldic crest to the front, depicting a running horse, spirally fluted and roped brass plume holder to the rear, down turned rim with turned edge, set with brass rivets, this mirrored at the base of the skull, struck with an indistinct mark to the brim. Circa 1580. See European Armour in the Tower of London, plate CIII for a similar example.
