A 1798 PATTERN BASKET HILTED BROADSWORD OF LARGE PROPORTIONS.
100cm fullered earlier family blade decorated with talismanic celestial imagery, regulation brass hilt composed of flattened rounded bars united by shaped plain junction plates, flattened bun-shaped pommel incised with a saltire, chamois lined red cloth liner, wire bound fishskin grip, in its brass mounted tooled leather scabbard. See IX229 Royal Armouries for a similar example which is noted is of a type carried by the 79th Foot (Cameron Highlanders) See pages 130-132 plates F24-F25d, British Basket-Hilted Swords by Cyril Mazansky. The length of the blade exceeds the expected norm by some 15cm.
