OF TIPU SULTAN INTEREST - AN 18TH CENTURY INDIAN FIRANGI OR KHANDA FROM THE MYSORE ARSENAL

90.5cm fullered blade incised with Mysore Arsenal markings to one side, the spine of the blade painted with the inventory number 7, the foliate-shaped reinforce at the forte decorated with scrolling foliage and flowerheads in gold, characteristic hilt with upturned shell guard, the underside decorated with a border of bubri and flowerheads, the broad tapering knuckle bow with foliate chiselled decoration with a gold bubri border, the disc-form pommel decorated with bubri to the underside and a dot-form geometric border to the top, elongated curved finial with bud terminal and pierced foliate base. The stylised tiger stripe imagery known as bubri was the personal motif of the ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore, Tipu Sultan.
