81cm blade by Wilkinson, serial no. for 1914-17, etched with scrolling foliage, crowned GVR cypher and regimental badge, owner's initials D.S.B., regulation steel gothic hilt incorporating the regimental badge, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its field service scabbard. Believed to be the sword of Lieutenant D S Browne referred to as the Company Commander in Rudyard Kipling's full and graphic account of the crossing of the Broembeek, during the Battle of Paschendaele on 9th October 1917, see Irish Guards in the Great War by Kipling, and further references Browne as wounded on two occasions, once in this costly attack and once in February 1917 and Gazetted for the MC in January 1919.
