A SCARCE LATE 17TH OR EARLY 18TH CENTURY MATROSSES BRASS HILTED INFANTRY HANGER

69.5cm slightly curved fullered blade bearing the maker's stamp for T. HOLLIER, characteristic brass hilt retaining one of its upturned shell guards cast with a grotesque mask, the downturned quillon incised VXX, D-shaped knuckle guard, the pommel in the form of the head of a mythical beast, ribbed grip. See European Swords and Daggers in the Tower of London page 28, plate 67a. Thomas Hollier is recorded as working for the Board of Ordnance in 1692.
