A RARE FRENCH ANXII NAVAL SWORD FOR A HIGH RANKING OFFICER

74cm blade etched with trophies of arms and foliage against a blued ground and retaining some gilt decoration, brass hilt with pommel with chiselled decoration, plain knuckle guard, the langets with anchors, flags and the head of Minerva, diagonally fluted ebony grip, contained in its leather covered wooden scabbard with brass mounts, the locket embossed with a mermaid, foliage and a shell, twin suspension hooks, the chape with shell terminal. An identical sword is in the Musee National de la Marine in Paris, MNM 33AR 162. See Aries, Armes Blanches Militaires Francaises, volume XIII.
