AN EARLY 16TH CENTURY GERMAN BASTARD OR HAND AND A HALF SWORD

103cm flattened diamond section blade, characteristic hilt with flattened down turned quillons with spatulate terminals, lower looping fore-guard and looping flattened rear guard with stepped foot, gadrooned ovoid pommel, leather wrapped cord bound waisted grip. See lot 184 Bonhams Arms and Armour Auction 24th April 2013, in which it is noted a similar example exists in the Wallace Collection, London, No. A476. See Plate 13, European Swords and Daggers in the Tower of London (HMSO) for three swords displaying similar characteristics to this example.
